Answer: –

The story narrates the murder of an old man. The narrator of the story was the killer himself. He tells us that he killed the old man without any motive. There was no personal enmity between them. The killer and the old man lived in same building. He was his friend and he loved him. He did not kill him for any material reason. He had never given him insult. He had never wrong to him. Then why the narrator wishes to kill him.

Soon we come to know that the narrator is a psychological case and he is not at all normal. He says that he is nervous fellow, but not mad. We do not believe in his words. Simply a nervous man cannot do all that what he has done in the story. Only a man who is off his hinges can do so.

The narrator of the story killed the old man because he hated his eye. He planned his murder in a very careful manner. First of all he became very kind to the old man. Secondly, he entered the bedroom of the old man in a cautious manner. He had an electric lamp in his had. He covered it completely so that light might not shine of it.

He threw a ray of light on the old man and found that he was sleeping. His eye, which he hated, was closed. He did not kill him on the first night. It was not the old man but his evil eye, which irritated him. For seven nights, he went to kill the old man and did not kill him because the eye was close.

It was on 8th night that he killed the fellow. He killed the old man in the most brutal way and cut his body into pieces. Then he disposed the body off under the wood floor and sat peacefully there upon.

All this shows that the narrator in the story was psychological case. He was not normal.
